Don’t get me started on hometown pride. As a Brooklyn native who has spent years outside of New York and the states, I relish in all this borough has to offer, from the seedy summer nights on the Coney Island boardwalk to the pretentious two hour waits for brunch at the Buttermilk Channel.
Seeing the exhibition ads in subway stations for Diego Rivera’s Murals for the Museum of Modern Art made me nostalgic about my time in the Midwest. In 1932, Rivera was commissioned by Edsel Ford to paint two murals in the Garden Court of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Inspired by his time at the Ford automotive plant on the Rouge River, he suggested painting all four murals instead.
Never have I met a population as proud of their hometown and home state as Michiganders. If you’ve ever seen someone pull out their Michigan hand map to pinpoint the location of their hometown, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Pride in Michigan is tantamount to pride in the auto industry. It’s a state that lives by the words “Drive American,” especially if you’re in southeast Michigan. If you don’t work in the auto industry, then someone in your family or your neighbor does. Visit the Detroit Institute of Arts’ Rivera Court and you can begin to understand Michigan’s proud industrial culture. Above is the fresco’s North Wall.
Which reminds me, I need to get to the MoMA before May 14th!
